Nutri-Score vs personalized score: why one grade is not enough

Nutri-Score is useful: it gives a simple signal about a product’s overall nutritional quality. But it does not know whether you are trying to lose weight, build muscle or simply eat better. That is where a personalized score changes the question.

The real question is not only “is this product good?”. Very often it is “is this product good for me, today, with my goal?”.

01

What Nutri-Score does well

Nutri-Score compares products with a shared grid: energy, sugars, saturated fat, salt, fiber, protein, fruit, vegetables, legumes and some food-family adjustments. It is excellent for a fast shelf-level signal, especially when comparing similar products.

02

What a personalized score adds

A personalized score does not replace Nutri-Score: it uses it as one signal among others. It adds your goal, calorie budget, macros, energy density, NOVA level, allergens, diet and the actual portion you are going to eat.

Three examples where a universal grade gets stuck

These examples do not make a food “good” or “bad” in absolute terms. They show why context changes the decision.

Sweet granola

May look acceptable if fiber lifts the grade.

Often penalized: dense calories and fast sugar.

Less penalized: useful density if the rest of the day is controlled.

Compare with plain muesli, oats, nuts and fruit.

Plain skyr

Strong general grade: low sugar, high protein.

Very useful: high satiety for few calories.

Useful, but sometimes too low-calorie if you struggle to eat enough.

A simple good choice when the ingredient list stays short.

Peanut butter

May be penalized for calories and fats.

Needs accurate dosing: 15 g and 60 g are not the same story.

Very practical for adding energy without much volume.

Prefer 100% peanuts, no added sugar or oil.

05

How to read a good personalized score

A good score should not feel magical. It should explain why it goes up or down, and stay readable in three seconds.

Goal

The same calories do not carry the same meaning in a deficit, maintenance or surplus.

Portion

The product is judged with the quantity you eat, not only per 100 g.

Macros

Protein, fiber, carbs, fats and calorie density are read together.

Quality

Nutri-Score, NOVA, additives and ingredients prevent reducing food to calories alone.

06

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming an A is always ideal for weight loss.
  • Assuming a calorie-dense food is automatically bad.
  • Comparing products without checking the real portion eaten.
  • Following a grade without reading the reasons behind it.
Verdict

So which one should you follow?

Keep Nutri-Score as a signal of general quality. Use a personalized score to decide whether the product fits your concrete goal. The two approaches do not fight each other: one answers “is it generally decent?”, the other answers “is it coherent for me?”.

FAQ

FAQ

Is Nutri-Score useless if I use a personalized score?

No. Nutri-Score remains a strong general-quality signal. A personalized score enriches it with your goal, your portion and your context.

Why can a calorie-dense product score well for muscle gain?

Because muscle gain often includes a calorie surplus. A dense product can help, as long as quality, macros and portion size stay coherent.

Is a personalized score medical advice?

No. It is a nutrition decision-support tool, not a diagnosis. If you have a medical condition, severe allergy or prescribed diet, follow professional medical advice.

Should the score change with quantity?

Yes. One spoon of peanut butter and three large spoons do not have the same impact on your day, even if the product is identical.
